National Gallery of Artr

The Kirov Academy of Ballet collaborated with the National Gallery of Art, in association with its upcoming exhibition, Diaghilev and the Ballets Russes, 1909 — 1929: When Art Danced with Music. KAB students performed a faithful recreation of Vaslav Nijinsky’s choreography of L’après-midi d’un faune (The Afternoon of a Faun), which was first performed in 1912 to the music of Claude DeBussy (Prélude à l’après-midi d’un faune). KAB students also performed a special adaptation of the pas de deux from Stravinsky’s the Firebird.

Children’s Theatre-in-the-Woods

KAB students performed excerpts from Russian classical ballets “Le Corsaire,” “Giselle,” “Talisman,” “Raymonda,” “The Sleeping Beauty,” and also ballet history characters like King Louis, Marie Camargo, Marie Taglioni and Anna Pavlova on July 20 at Theatre-in-the-Woods. 2013 Spring Performance Series

La Sylphide Act II

May 23-25, 2013, 7:00 pm

The George Washington University’s Lisner Auditorium

This series provides a mix of old and new. La Sylphide is heralded as one of the most important ballets of all time and the first ballet ever to be danced on pointe. When a fairy attracts a young Scotsman on the eve of his wedding, he faces a difficult choice between reality and impossible love with a spirit. Balanchine’s vigorously paced and technically demanding Allegro Brillante simultaneously showcases precision and pure abandon of movement, creating a thrilling experience for audiences.
