After School Program & Adult Program

Kirov Academy of Ballet is proud to offer excellent training to young dancers through its After School Program for ages 4-17 and its Adult Program for ages 18 and up. The After School Program’s highly qualified instructors work with each dancer in a step-by-step approach instilling the solid foundations of classical ballet, along with character building qualities such as focus, a strong work ethic, determination, and self-esteem. The Adult Program offers Adult Ballet, Yoga (morning and evening), Pilates, and Conditioning/Toning/Endurance classes, taught by passionate, certified instructors. With enrollment and subscription opportunities throughout the entire year, we hope to see you or your dancer with us very soon! No audition is required to enter these programs, except for the Upper Division (ages 15+).  (Please email to set up an audition date/time for entry into Upper Division.)

*A class may be cancelled if minimum enrollment of 5 students is not met.

The Children’s Division (ages 4-6) –  guides young children to learn the basic values and tenets of ballet and rhythm through exploring creative movements to music. Students learn how to have fun while exercising, as they also learn basic discipline and poise.

The Preparatory  Division (Prep-Ballet – ages 6-8) introduces children to the world of classical ballet with quality training from young dancers’ first steps. Students develop a love for dancing and a beginning understanding of music, as they establish a basic foundation necessary for the Pre-Academy Division, which follows.

The Pre-Academy Division (Ballet I, II, III – ages 8-14) offers aspiring young dancers the opportunity to train in the Vaganova method of classical ballet with our renowned instructors. Ideal for students seeking a demanding and rigorous program, classes offer proper development in preparation for continued studies in the full-time academy. The Pre- Academy Division is further broken down in three classes: Ballet I, Ballet II, and Ballet III. Classes also include Repertoire/Pointe and Character dance, depending on the age group. Class placement will be decided after the first day of attendance in the applicant’s age group.

The Upper Division (ages 15+) provides training to dancers looking to improve technique and artistry. The curriculum is designed to prepare students for all areas of dance including college programs and related careers. This unique program builds on the foundations of the Children’s, Preparatory, and Pre-Academy divisions and is further enhanced with contemporary/modern classes to develop well-rounded and sophisticated dancers. (Please email to set up an audition date/time for entry.)

**There are two performances dedicated to the After School Program per year.**

Code of Conduct for Students

Food/Drinks – Food, drinks (except water), and gum are generally not permitted in the building. We understand that dancers may need a snack at times (such as a granola bar, juice boxes and fruit) but full meals, sauces, dressings, soups, open containers or messy snacks are not permitted. Please be vigilant about cleaning up after eating to avoid mice.

Restricted Areas – In order to respect the privacy of boarding students, the following areas are prohibited: dormitory floors, mail room, recreation room, cafeteria, computer lab, Jacuzzi room, and Workout room.

Curtsy/Bow – All students acknowledge KAB instructors with a traditional curtsy (girls) or bow (boys) when passing in the hallway. Students will be shown how to perform this at orientation.

Attendance –Students are expected to arrive 20 min early in order to prepare and warm-up. If late, participation is at the teacher’s discretion. One absence per month may be “made up” in the level below their class. This is determined by KAB on a case-by-case basis, and is not guaranteed. Students with excessive lateness and/or absences will be prohibited from performing and could eventually be dismissed from the program.

Personal Belongings – Bags and personal belongings are not to be left in the hallways. Bags may be brought into class or left with parents.

Orientation on First Day – There will be a short orientation on the first day of class for all students and parents, where we will go over the program, Kirov culture and expectations and introduce the teacher. A sheet with this information and more will be handed out on that day.

Note to Parents/Guardians

  • Waiting During Class: Due to limited waiting space, we ask parents to drop-off/pick-up dancers. There will be a mid-year Parent Observation night when family and friends are invited into the studio to watch the entire class. Watching class at any other time is prohibited.
  • Sign In/Out Procedures: Adults will sign in/out at the front desk and must be on our list of parents/adults allowed to bring/pick-up a dancer. Adult visitors will then be given a badge to wear while in the building that must be returned upon signing out. Due to limited waiting space and staff, students are asked to arrive no earlier than 30 minutes before class.
  • KAB Culture: In order to respect the learning environment we have created for dancers at KAB, all students and visitors are asked to remain quiet in the hallways. Please keep visiting children with you in the waiting areas.
  • Inclement Weather Policy: Please call 202.636.0655 or the front desk 202.832.1087 after 2pm on days with inclement weather to find out what decision has been made for the Evening Programs. Email notification will also be sent out once a decision is reached. Disregard any Kirov closures listed on television or radio; these are only for the Full-Time Academy. When possible we will re-schedule cancelled classes, however; it is not guaranteed.
  • Parking & Drop-Off/Pick-Up: The circular drive in the front of the building is only for quick drop-off and pick-ups. Please remember students are not allowed to leave the building without an adult signing them out. Please use our free gated parking lot provided in the back of the building.
  • Driving Directions: Our address is 4301 Harewood Rd NE, Washington, DC, 20017, however; if you are using a GPS please use our alternate address: 10 Fort Drive NE, Washington, DC, 20011.
