E-PIANO COMPETITION RULES


The E-piano competition will take place from August 24 to October 24, 2020, and is open to all young pianists up to age 17, from around the world. Participants will compete in virtual rounds in Seoul and Washington, DC.

Junior Division

Competition Rules & Procedures


NoDESCRIPTION
1.

The Competition will consist of virtual online rounds: 

  • Junior Division: Preliminary, Semi-Final, and Final
  • Young Artist Division: Preliminary, Semi-Final, and Final
2.

The Jury will advance up to 24 contestants to the Semi-Final Round (12 from JD and 12 from YA), and 12 contestants to the Final Round (6 from JD and 6 from YA).  

3.

The Final Round will take place at the Kirov Recital Hall on October 24, 2020, with the playback performance through the Spirio piano, in front of a panel of live jury members. 

4.

The Final Rounds of the competition will be broadcasted live via online streaming and recorded for subsequent broadcasts, video, or audio recording use.

5.

Applicants are required to sign a release form yielding all rights for the competition-related events and materials to the Kirov E-Competition, its assignees, or its licensees.

6.

Contestants may not contact or speak with any member of the jury while they are still active in the Kirov E-Competition. Any violation of this rule may disqualify the contestant. 

7.

Applicants must not be under professional management. Previous prize winners of the Kirov competition and current students of the judges may not apply.

Competition Repertoire


JUNIOR DIVISION

YOUNG ARTIST DIVISION

Preliminary Round: 

  • Two pieces of the contestant’s choice from different periods (up to 10 min.)

Semi-Final Round:

  • Two pieces from different periods including one movement from a classical sonata (up to 10 min.)

Final Round: 15-minute Recital Program including:

  • 2 to 3 pieces, including one movement from a classical sonata

*A contestant may choose the repertoire from the previous rounds


The performance must be from memory with no repeats.

Preliminary Round:

  • Two Pieces from different periods including one movement from a classical sonata by Joseph Haydn, Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, or Ludwig van Beethoven (up to 10 min.)

Semi-Final Round:

  • Two pieces from different periods including a major Romantic work (up to 15 min.)

Final Round: 30-minute Recital Program including:

  • One movement from a classical sonata 
  • One or more romantic works
  • One or more works from the Impressionism period up to the present (permitted to choose from the suite) 

*A contestant may choose the repertoire from the previous rounds


The performance must be from memory with no repeats.

Application Rules & Procedures


NoDESCRIPTION
1.

All applications are due by 11:59 p.m. EST on Monday, August 24, 2020, submitted online with a nonrefundable fee of $120 USD. Applicants must be age 17 or under.

2.

Online upload should include:

  • Video performance up to 10 minutes on YouTube or YouKu links
  • Birth certificate or equivalent proof of age
  • Signed media release form
  • Application fee of $120 USD payable through the Kirov online system
3.

An acknowledgment will be sent to each applicant upon receipt of the completed Application Form and enclosures. Applicants will not be allowed to submit unless all information is complete.

The  Kirov E-Competition will accept no responsibility for applications not received. All applications will be reviewed by a selection committee and treated as confidential.

Video Submission Rules & Procedures


NoDESCRIPTION
1.

All videos must be submitted through the Kirov online application system (up to 10 min.).

2.

Applicants should submit one video containing all works, paused between each repertoire selection. 

3.

The video must clearly show the pianist’s face and hands in the frame at all times. All videos must be shot from one angle with a single fixed camera (no zooming, tilting, or panning).

4.

All works must be played from memory, music scores are not permitted.

5.

Videos must not be filmed more than six months prior to submission. 

6.

Only solo piano works will be accepted.

Prizes & Performance Awards


 

Winners Concert

The top six finalists in Junior and the top six finalists in Young Artists divisions will compete on Saturday, October 24, 2020, for first, second, and third prizes, including the Steinway Artist Grants; the performance awards, including the debut recital at the Kennedy Center; and The Embassy Series performance in Washington, DC. The top three winners will be awarded scholarships to the Kirov Summer Music Festival in August of 2021.

The winners will also have an opportunity to take private lessons (online or in-person) with world-renowned teachers and artists, Gary Graffman (Curtis Institute of Music), Jerome Lowenthal (Juilliard School), and John Perry (Rutgers University).

The Semi-Final and Final Competition rounds are streamed live to the public. Tickets for the Winners Concert at Kennedy Center and The Embassy Series will be available at kirovcompetition@kabdc.org.
